Bayview tower approval shakes faith in Community Design Plan process

Ottawa city council’s recent approval of a mixed-use development near Bayview Station has some wondering whether there is any point in devoting time and energy into creating a Community Design Plan.

CDPs are a way of setting out a blueprint for development of a neighbourhood that gives residents a say and peace of mind about what to expect, particularly when it comes to intensification. The CDP created for the Bayview area, which was turned into a secondary plan that is an official city document and approved by council in 2013, capped building heights at 30 storeys around Bayview Station.

Yet on Wednesday, council approved a proposal by Trinity Group for a three-tower complex called Trinity Station that will be 65, 56 and 27 storeys high. Full story
