Changing spaces: Giving new purpose to unloved spaces

This month’s article is about a topic many of us think about from time to time. Sometimes our spaces simply stop working for us, and we begin to wonder what changes we could make to make our homes feel fresh again.

I like to think of this as “changing spaces.”

It’s common to look at our homes and see each room in only one way. We assume a space has a single purpose and rarely stop to consider that it might work beautifully as something completely different.

But sometimes the most inspiring design ideas come from simply looking at a room and asking: What else could this be?

Bedrooms, in particular, are wonderful candidates for changing room functions.

A popular option today is transforming a bedroom into a home office. With a little paint, some inspiring artwork and a creative furniture layout, you can create a workspace that makes working from home feel both enjoyable and productive.

In this home, the spare bedroom wasn’t being used. The homeowner was also experiencing mobility challenges, so she decided to transform her guest room into a laundry room and office combination. The new space functions perfectly for her lifestyle and has made daily routines much easier.

Another wonderful idea is turning a bedroom into a hobby, craft, or sewing room — a place where you can unwind, create and learn.

Follow along as this bedroom is transformed into the homeowner’s dream sewing space. She even designed and built her own cutting and storage table, making the room both beautiful and incredibly functional.

One of my favourite “changing spaces” ideas is creating a dressing room. It feels like such a luxury! Once you have a dressing room, you will never want to live without one again. It’s such a lovely way to begin your day.

One of my clients had a unique room in her home that wasn’t being used to its full potential. Together, we transformed it into the dressing room of her dreams. Now, every time she walks through the door, she feels special.

This concept can be applied to almost any space in your home — and even outside.

Sheds, for example, can easily become inspiring spaces. Potting sheds and “she sheds” have become very popular and they’re a wonderful way to create something special without breaking the budget.

In this case, the homeowners had a beautiful brick shed that felt far too nice for storing lawn mowers and garden tools. Instead, they transformed it into a charming art studio and guest space. It’s such a sweet little retreat — and they even added some personality to the front of the shed.

Sometimes the key to loving your home again isn’t moving or renovating — it’s simply seeing your spaces differently. So, take a fresh look around your home. Is there a room that could become something new?

You might be surprised at the possibilities.
