Design 101: 10 ways to improve the front of your home

Warmer weather is on the way and we’ll be spending more time outdoors. That may prompt you to notice small things that need to be improved at the front of your home.

Here are 10 quick ways to update and freshen your home’s exterior.

1. Paint or stain your front door

Transforming your front door with a new colour is one of the simplest, cost-effective ways to make your exterior pop.

Wash your door with an exterior cleaner (I like TSP) to remove any dirt buildup. Allow the door to completely dry and then apply a primer and your paint.

While you’re doing this, check the door hardware. Does it need to be updated or changed? Now is the time to do it to really transform your door.

2. Hang an eye-catching decoration on your door

Adding something new to the door gives the front of your home a fresh look. Plus, it’s a lovely way to welcome guests.

Customize your door decor and change it up as often as you like. They are an inexpensive way to elevate your entryway, and you can either buy different ones from the store or make them yourself.

3. Change out old light fixtures

If your outdoor light fixtures are worn out or outdated — or you simply don’t like them — replacing lighting is simple.

Choose new fixtures that work with the style of your home’s exterior. Don’t forget to change the lights over the garage as well as in the backyard. They ideally should all be the same style, type and colour.

4. Upgrade your exterior door mat

It’s amazing how a new door mat can freshen up your porch. Maybe you’ve had the same old mat for years. Or maybe you’re someone who likes to stay seasonal, so you want a mat that matches the nature of the seasons. There are so many styles for you to choose from — coco coir, rubber, indoor/outdoor mats; find one that appeals to you.

5. Add a front porch seating area

Creating a new seating area on your front porch allows you to make it as simple or elaborate as you like. Be sure to select chairs and loveseats suitable for outdoors. Who knows, you may have pieces in the garage or shed that you can use.

In addition, rugs and tables create a cosy and functional seating space to enjoy from dawn till dusk.

Adding more seating to your outdoor areas not only elevates the look of your home but creates a welcoming environment for friends and family to enjoy.

6. Add a pop of colour

Cushions and throws in colourful patterns or solids add a punch of colour to your porch quickly, easily and often at a low cost. Make sure they are outdoor cushions that are specially treated to ensure enjoyment all season long. I usually take my throws into the house when I am not using them.

7. Incorporate container plants

Add potted plants around your front porch to elevate your home. Container plants are fairly inexpensive, low maintenance and can be reused for future planting if the flowers perish in winter. You can also select unique pots and group them in different areas on your porch or exterior.

Best of all, shopping at local nurseries allows you to support small area businesses. If you have any questions, you can consult the nursery experts on the best plants and flowers for your area.

8. Need new house numbers?

Select house numbers in a contrasting finish to your exterior to achieve eye-catching curb appeal. Why not install your address numbers vertically for a unique look?

There is lots to choose from. For instance, numbers may be made from brushed aluminum, have black, white or bronze finishes, and some even light up.

9. Swap out, paint or add shutters

Shutters accentuate the architectural style of your home, adding character. Most popular types of shutters are panelled, louvred, and board and batten. They are available in a variety of materials, such as MDF, vinyl, faux wood and natural wood.

Select the one that best suits your style of home.

10. Install walkway lighting

Illuminating the sidewalk to your entryway creates a path to welcome you and adds ambience to the front of your home. Many ground lights are solar-powered, so no cords or plugs are required to keep them lit. You can also strategically place them around your gardens to highlight your garden beds.

These tips, in any combination, will be sure to add a personality and interest to your home’s exterior.
