Design 101: How to curate your home

Have you ever wondered what designers mean when they say a home is “curated?”

To curate your home means to thoughtfully choose, edit and arrange the things you love so your space tells your story. It’s less about following a particular trend and more about creating a home that feels personal, collected and uniquely you.

Start with what you have

Before you buy anything, shop at your own home. Take a good look around and remove the things you no longer love or need. You may be surprised by what you rediscover in a closet, basement or another room.

Keep the pieces that have meaning: a family heirloom, a favourite piece of art, a wonderful, thrifted find or something that simply makes you smile.

Find your common thread

You don’t need to choose one decorating style. In fact, mixing styles often makes a home much more interesting.

Instead, look for common threads — perhaps colours, textures, shapes or materials that appear throughout your home.

Most importantly, think about how you want your home to feel: cosy; calm; energetic; welcoming?

Choose your anchor pieces

When it comes to larger purchases, spend your money thoughtfully. A comfortable sofa, beautiful rug or solid wood dining table can become the foundation of a room.

Look for pieces you truly love and that can evolve with you as your style changes.

Mix old and new

This is where the fun begins. Pair a modern coffee table with a vintage chair. Add an antique lamp to a contemporary space. Mix wood, woven textures, metal, glass and soft fabrics.

And don’t forget to look beyond traditional retail stores. Thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, yard sales and local artisans can be wonderful sources of unique pieces.

Edit, edit, edit!

One of the most important parts of curating is knowing what not to put in the room.

You don’t need to fill every shelf, wall or tabletop. Give your favourite pieces some breathing room so they can really shine.

When styling, try combining different heights and shapes and grouping objects in odd numbers. A tall vase, a small bowl and a stack of books can create a simple but interesting arrangement.

Take your time

A curated home doesn’t happen overnight. It evolves as you live in it, travel, discover things and make memories. Resist the temptation to fill an empty space simply because it’s empty. Wait for the piece that makes your heart skip a beat.

And here’s the best part: anyone can curate their home.

It doesn’t require a large budget or a large house. Thrifting, repurposing and shopping your own home can create some of the most interesting and meaningful spaces.

Really, it comes down to three simple habits:

  • Patience: Don’t buy just to fill a space.
  • Editing: Be willing to let go of what no longer works.
  • Intention: Before you buy, ask yourself, “Do I really love this, or am I just filling an empty spot?”

Your home should tell your story, not a catalogue’s.

I hope these ideas inspire you along your own curating journey.
