The growing popularity of new-build townhomes has prompted builder eQ Homes to start offering them in its traditionally adult-lifestyle portfolio, and this summer it opened its first-ever two-storey townhome models — at Fernbank Crossing in Stittsville.
Targeting entry-level buyers, eQ deliberately chose to offer layouts under 2,000 square feet to keep prices down and “gently introduce ourselves into the market,” says sales manager Harley Wallin.
There are four floor plans, three of which have been built as models. All units feature sunken foyers, open-concept main floors, finished basement rec rooms and roomy master bedrooms.
“And there’s still room for you and your family to function,” says marketing and brand manager Tobin Kardish. “The idea is that we didn’t want people to feel cramped.”
The Atticus
Type: 2-storey townhome
Size: 1,835 sq. ft. + 285 sq. ft. of finished basement space
Bedrooms: 3 or 4
Bathrooms: 2.5
Key features: The Atticus is a corner unit that boasts a rare double-car garage. “That’s a big selling point,” says Wallin. The model feels like a single and makes for a great family starter home. The layout promotes easy entertaining on the main floor, separating the living area from the utility space, with casual living downstairs and private family areas, including the laundry, upstairs.
The Atticus decor imagines a young family living there, where the mother is an interior designer who works from home. The second-floor loft makes for a perfect home office but could just as easily be turned into a fourth bedroom.
The Pandora
Type: 2-storey townhome
Size: 1,476 sq. ft. + 220 sq. ft. of finished basement space
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 1.5 or 2.5
Key features: For an interior unit, it’s surprisingly bright. “The light that flows through makes you feel like you’re in an end unit,” says Wallin. “It has wonderful natural light flow from the front to the back of the house.” The smallest of the floor plans, the model pictures a professional couple who have no children.
Blue is an important element of the decor in the Pandora, partly to have a little fun and partly so that it will stand out and stick in people’s memory, says Wallin.
The Scarlet
Type: 2-storey townhome
Size: 1,898 sq. ft. + 260 sq. ft. of finished basement space
Bedrooms: 3
Bathrooms: 2.5
Key features: This is the largest of the models and it’s available as either an interior or end unit. Designed assuming it is home to a single mother with two children, “the idea of this house was very soft, a little more contemporary in the kitchen feel but very soft white subtle tones throughout,” says Kardish. Dual homework stations on the main floor keep the kids close, while the basement is designed as the kids’ getaway.
Upstairs, mom’s getaway is the ensuite. It’s where many of the upgrades are focused, including a full glass mirror, hard-surface counter and high-gloss cabinets.
Prices
At the time of writing, eQ’s townhomes at Fernbank Crossing started at $352,900. Remember that prices change; for current information, see our development profile.
In the area
Plans for this new, west-end community include more schools, parks, and shopping. Stittsville and neighbouring Kanata are already home to many shops, services and events. The community is also just a short drive to Hwy. 417. As well, you can walk to the Trans Canada Trail.
