Trends are fun, but timeless kitchen cabinetry is a better investment.
Pierre Dromaguet from Potvin Construction, a local, award-winning family business specializing in the design, construction and installation of custom cabinetry, brings us up to speed on timeless kitchen cabinetry features and trends.
The following transcription is the first of a three-part video series with Potvin Construction on buying cabinetry. The other two are titled Insider Insights: Three must-have kitchen cabinetry accessories and Insider insights: Questions for cabinet suppliers. All articles have been edited for brevity and clarity.
Q: Which trends and features should a homeowner choose if they want kitchen cabinetry that’s timeless?
A: The first thing that would come to mind is ergonomics and layout — the golden rule of the triangle is something you need to have. Make sure you have a classic layout and the ergonomics are right. When it comes to trendy new layouts, that’s something I would steer away from if I’m thinking timeless.

Number two is a more subtle, warm colour palette. You want to have something that’s not too bold — very light colours, something that is going to age very well.
Number three would be the Shaker style door. It has been around forever and basically lends itself to so many different styles.

Another thing that ages very well would be built-in appliances. That could be also a very good feature, because basically you don’t see it as ever going out of style.
For countertops, quartz is so popular. Finding quartz with very subtle colours, neutral tones would be a good bet. So, nothing over the top there, and the same goes for the backsplash.
So, that would be my take.
