Three easy ways to bring spring inside

Are you itching to bring spring inside? We’ve just had the very well attended and extremely busy Ottawa Home & Garden Show and it was fantastic! I think everyone there was looking for some long-awaited spring inspiration. I have to admit I was as well.

The days are getting longer and the sun is out more. Birds are singing and even though Mother Nature continues to toy with us with an early spring snow and ice storm, we know spring is on its way. I just love the change from winter to spring; it’s like a breath of fresh air into our lives and our homes.

With that in mind, I have some quick ways you can bring spring inside. They’re easy, cost effective, yet inspiring ideas that use either faux or real flowers. After a long winter, there is no better feeling than having a pop of colour in our homes. Flowers of all types, real or faux, can really help lift our spaces and spirits.

Here are three easy DIY floral ideas that anyone can do to bring a bit of spring inside.

Flowers & fruit

Flowers and fruit make the best combination. This easy arrangement has just a few ingredients:

  • Grab a clear glass vase; any size will do
  • Slice up some lemons and limes
  • Pick up some fresh tulips or daffodils

Place a mix of lemons and limes into the vase, add your flowers and water and then enjoy! It’s amazing how long this arrangement will last and it smells so nice.

Getting cosy

This covered jar and tulips idea adds a little texture to spring. Find an old sweater and cut off the sleeves to fit the jar or jars you will be using for this arrangement. The sweater can be light- or heavy-weight, whichever you prefer.

Place the sleeve over the jar and simply add your flowers and water. Then place it on a tray with other items to create the perfect vignette. It can’t be any easier.

Say hello

Nothing says “welcome” to your family and friends like a spring-inspired door. Here’s a fun idea that I have been doing for many years.

Grab an umbrella and hang it on your door (or somewhere inside if you want to work and stay warm). You want the umbrella to hang as it naturally would. Tie some ribbon or twine around it and make a bow.

Then select an array of your favourite spring faux flowers and add them into the open folds. Step back and see if you have to add or adjust anything. Make sure you tie it tight enough for the flowers to stay put. I also find it easier to use faux flowers since you don’t have to worry about them fading. Hang the arrangement on your door, if you had it inside to start, and enjoy.

Tip: An umbrella bouquet makes a lovely hostess gift or a great gift for a senior in a retirement residence for the door to their room. It brightens their day and everyone who visits them.

One last tip! This is a personal one. I love using patterned paper serviettes every day. I especially love bringing out spring-themed ones, even when the weather is still a little chilly out there. It makes me feel that spring is really around the corner.
