Multi-award-winning renovator and custom builder Amsted Design-Build offers an intriguing project in the 2024 RenoTour Parade of Homes.
This is a visually striking main-floor remodel in Ottawa West that was thoughtfully designed for entertaining while respecting the home’s original features and keeping accessibility needs in mind.
The RenoTour Parade of Homes is presented by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) and RenoMark (a national program that identifies professional contractors who have signed on to a code of conduct that protects the homeowner).
This home is one of nine that can be seen in person on Oct. 6. There is no charge, and the tour map can be found online (or scan/tap the accompanying QR code). You can also pick up a map in person at the GOHBA booth at the Ottawa Fall Home Show (EY Centre, Sept. 26-29).

Q: Why did you join the tour this year?
A: The RenoTour is such a great opportunity for homeowners and renovators alike, and Amsted has been a proud supporter since its inception. People are most inspired when they can see and feel something, so to be able to walk through a completed renovation not only gives homeowners a fantastic vantage point of what can be done in their own homes, but it gives renovators the chance to highlight their design and construction quality as well.
Q: Why choose this project for the tour?
A: We love this project because it’s an extensive renovation that beautifully combines new design elements while honouring the original architecture of the home. This home is a prime example of how accessibility can be seamlessly integrated without compromising on design or beauty. The untouched original features blend seamlessly with the renovations, creating a cohesive and elevated space. With many high-end finishes, this home is not only functional but also perfect for entertaining.
Q: What can you tell us about this project?
A: This was an extensive home renovation that focused on the kitchen, dining room, living room, sunroom, powder room and laundry room. Interior design was a cornerstone of this project as it ties in with the original architecture of the home.
It features:
- Refinished ramp with glass railing and hardwood flooring.
- Many kitchen upgrades such as panel-ready appliances, Invisacook stovetop, cold shelf countertop, wet bar and slat wood details on the island.
- Laundry room designed to be very functional with basket storage and pop-out hanging options.
- Sliding barn doors tie the wood elements together while also giving the bedroom area of the home more privacy.
- Custom hidden storage with wood slat façade.
- Architectural style — keeping everything in character with the mid-century style, while modernizing some features.
- Opening up the kitchen — we removed the existing stone fireplace while retaining character with the stone column and creating more flexibility in the kitchen layout.
- New skylight — we replaced an old skylight with a modern and much larger one. It performs better and enhances the original feature.
- Glass doors to the rear — this one was a challenge due to lack of accessible options. We replaced old, inefficient doors with new ones that we modified to create sufficient accessibility.
- New fireplace — relocated to a better location that takes advantage of the connection between the sunroom and dining/living space, instead of awkwardly cutting the kitchen in half.
- Accessibility — everything had to maintain the already accessible features.
Q: What kinds of things should visitors watch out for when they tour the project?
A: This home is not only visually striking but also thoughtfully designed for entertaining. It features a spacious open kitchen with a large island, a dining room that comfortably seats 12+ guests, and a wet bar for seamless hosting. Additionally, the home is equipped with accessibility features, including low-transition flooring and a ramp for wheelchair access, ensuring comfort and inclusivity for all.
Q: What do you expect to have on hand for visitors?
A: The homeowners won’t be available on tour day, but our team will be! We will have members of our development and construction team ready to answer questions about all aspects of the build, along with before photos to give a true sense of the total transformation of this space.
