Sending some P.E.I.-inspired design your way

As I was thinking about this month’s topic, I had an idea: why not send a bit of P.E.I.-inspired design to you in the Ottawa area? As a former Ottawan and current Islander, I wanted to bring the beach vibe to you.

With the weather getting warmer, our homes naturally begin to feel lighter and airier. So, I thought I would share this island-inspired design vibe that is perfect for the summer months: The Beach.

The Beach theme is incredibly easy and quick to pull together. The colours that work beautifully for this look are crisp whites, shades of blue, soft greys and even a splash of light teal or turquoise.

It just so happens that one of my guest rooms already has the perfect beach vibe. I found a beach sign while thrifting and it became the inspiration for the entire space.

As I looked through my linens, I was delighted to discover I could easily layer them on the bed — and, even better, the colours all worked together beautifully. What a pleasant surprise.

I added some navy cushions that I already owned, along with a cushion featuring trees that tied everything together perfectly. Even the nesting tables I had thrifted months ago found their place in the room, along with a lamp that complemented the look effortlessly.

Now for the accessories — because every beach-inspired space needs a few finishing touches.

Of course, driftwood is a must. I gathered several pieces and placed them in a basket beside the bed. Every time I find another interesting piece, I simply add it to the collection.

On the dresser, I arranged a couple of driftwood pieces alongside a wooden ship and a small house. Together, they create a charming vignette. I also added a lantern, a few decorative accessories, and a snake plant for a touch of greenery.

One of my favourite details is the feather macramé hanging on the wall. It was a gift from a friend and I finally found the perfect spot for it.

The final addition to the room was a piece of feather and driftwood art that I created a few years ago. It looks right at home sitting on the windowsill.

It’s almost like shopping right in your own home. Be sure to check closets, the basement, garage, storage rooms — anywhere you tuck things away. You never know what hidden treasures you might discover.

And let’s not forget the floor. A natural jute mat or circular rug is the perfect finishing touch for a beach-themed room. Not only does it add texture and warmth, it helps create that relaxed coastal feel.

As I stepped back to admire the finished room, I was amazed at how quickly it all came together — and even more surprised at how perfectly everything co-ordinated. Somehow, all the pieces seemed meant for this space, long before I knew what the room’s theme would be.

Tips for creating your own beach vibe

  • Use lighter fabrics and natural textures.
  • Choose a colour palette of whites, greys and blues, accented with touches of navy, turquoise or teal.
  • Let accessories tell the story — think shells, driftwood, boats, baskets, lanterns and candles.
  • Select one main piece of inspiration for the room, such as artwork, a sign or a favourite thrifted find.
  • Add a jute mat or circular rug to bring warmth and texture to the space.

One of the things I love most about this theme is its versatility. Whether you live in a condo, a house or a cottage, a beach-inspired room can work beautifully. There’s something about the soft colours, natural elements and casual styling that instantly creates a sense of calm.

After a long day at work, it’s wonderful to come home to a space that feels like a relaxing getaway — your own little piece of the Island, right at home.
